With recent scares of lead-laced water contamination in our public waterways, there is no better time to have your home drinking water tested for lead. Here at Owens Soft Water, we have over 20 proud years of experience in the water quality analysis and treatment industry. We offer a free water analysis and stock products designed to help correct any of your drinking water issues.
While lead has vastly been removed from our daily lives, lead contamination of our water sources is still a real danger. Typically, this hazard occurs when service pipes containing lead erode – well known in areas where water has high acidity or low mineral content. Unless your home was built after 1987, you are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures, and solder – potential concerns.
Your local water authority should have information regarding drinking water test results (including the results of lead). However, if you are unsure as to whether or not your tap water contains lead, the only guaranteed method is to have your tap water tested by a water treatment professional. The EPA allows only 15 parts (of lead) per billion (ppb) – if your water testing level is higher than this standard, you are at risk for lead contamination.
Contaminated Water Concerns
Remember, lead cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. While lead can come from a range of environmental sources, drinking contaminated water can make up more than 20 percent of a person’s total exposure. If left unnoticed, lead poisoning can negatively affect any individual. Children experiencing lead poisoning may have behavior and learning problems, lower IQ, hyperactivity, slowed growth, and in rare cases, death. In pregnant women, lead can be accumulated in bones and transferred over to a fetus, resulting in reduced growth or premature birth. Adults may suffer from high blood pressure, decreased kidney function, or reproductive problems.
